This project emerged while André was between studios and had a small work space that did not allow for painting.
She draws on discarded books sourced from university and public libraries. The contents may no longer be useful, but the object itself - bound paper - can have an extended life. She responds to the graphic conventions of a page layout with formal and informal mark making.

This small hardcover book was found outside the Elam Fine Arts Library, University of Auckland, in their ‘free books’ pile. I had been carrying it for a while, admiring scale, layout, paper quality, as well as the rules for compositors and readers.
These explorations of composition within the pages of ‘the rules’ are a re-presentation of the text through the addition of visual examples. These arrangements of line, texture and tone hint at a visual narrative.
While I was working on this book the university closed this treasure house of cultural knowledge, absorbing the books into the general collections. Many were disposed of in the process.
This work was selected as a finalist in the 2020 Parkin Drawing Prize.

This softcover book was found outside the Faculty of Education Library, University of Auckland, in their ‘free books’ pile. The cover grabbed my eye first - pink! Then I was excited by the paper quality and type. And oh - the diagrams!
This work was selected as a finalist in the 2020 Wallace Art Awards.
